Born in Bohemia in 1898, Karel Koenig was a teenage Calvary Officer on the Russian and Italian Fronts in World War I. He avoided a bullet in the back whilst escaping the Nazis in World War II, only was to be transported to Australia on the ‘Dunera’ in 1940. He left a mother, brother, wife and children in Czechoslovakia. Their letters to him during the war years became the Voices From His Suitcase.
